The famous Alaska cruise is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world. Like the airfare, the cheapest deals are found during off-peak times in May or September, with Alaskan cruise season running from May-September because of conditions. Depending on the type of Alaska cruises you're looking for you can relax in the height of luxury with everything from casinos, indoor swimming pools and rock-climbing on board. But it comes with a price, depending on if you want to take to the seas in style on a big cruise liner or in a more modest fashion on a smaller one.
Most Alaska cruises are 7-days on average, though there are some 11 and 14 days expeditions that include more glacier watching and ports of call. Generally the departure points are in Vancouver or Seattle and there are two types of Alaskan cruises--ones that take you on an inside passage--through the islands off British Columbia. The stops usually include Juneau, Ketchikan, Glacier Bay National Park and Sitka, which is a former Russian outpost. There is also the Gulf of Alaska "glacier route" which takes you south from Seward, Alaska or north from Seattle or Vancouver.
Alaskan land tours are an important part of the Alaska cruise experience, but they also cost extra. They can range in price anywhere from $50 to $500. You can buy them when you get your tickets or when you are on the ship. If you wait too long however, they can sell out depending on how popular the excursion is. However, you can save money by circumventing the cruise line and booking directly with the Alaska tour operators if you plan ahead.
